Metric Shafts, Rods & Collars

Shafts, rods, and collars are types of non-threaded fasteners used to manufacture, connect, support, and control moving parts within industrial assemblies. At Metric & Multistandard, we supply a variety of metric shafts, rods, and bar stock. These products are available in a range of sizes, materials, and configurations, so we can supply exactly what you need for your projects.

Types of Metric Shafting and Metric Bar Stock from Metric & Multistandard

Drill Rod

Drill rods are cylindrical lengths of cold-worked, chrome-vanadium steel. These rods can be water- or oil-hardened for specific applications, and are commonly machined into drills, taps, reamers, milling cutters, and dowel pins. We offer drill rods in diameters from 1mm to 50mm.

Shafting

Metric shafting is a type of precision-ground round bar used in applications where consistent diameter, straightness, and dimensional accuracy are critical. Available in brass, steel, and A2 304 stainless steel, shafting is often used for motor drive shafts, laboratory equipment, linear motion assemblies, machinery, and other rotating systems. Metric & Multistandard supplies metric shafting in one-, two-, or three-meter lengths, with diameters ranging from 4mm to 70mm.

Hexagon Rod

Hexagon rod is a type of rod with a six-sided, hexagonal cross-section. Hexagon rod is often machined into fittings, fasteners, spacers, tooling, and other components that require flat gripping surfaces or resistance to rotation. We supply hexagon rod in steel and brass, in one-, two-, or three-meter lengths, and with across-flats ranging from 4mm to 60mm.

Square Rod

Square rod is a type of rod with a four-sided, square cross-section. Like hexagon rod, square rod has flat, equal-width sides and is excellent for applications requiring grip or rotational resistance, such as fabrication, machining, structural assemblies, and general manufacturing operations. Square rod can be manufactured from hot-rolled steel or cold-rolled steel for enhanced performance, and is available with across-flats ranging from 4x4mm to 50x50mm.

Key Stock

Key stock describes lengths of metal bar with a square or rectangular cross section. Available in brass, steel, and A2 304 stainless steel, key stock is available in a wide range of sizes and lengths. Key stock is often used to produce machinery keys that locate components on round shafts by fitting into matching slots and allowing parts such as pulleys, gears, couplings, or sprockets to rotate with the shaft.

Flat Stock

Flat stock is lengths of precision rectangular bars. While often used as a spacer or shim, flat stock is highly versatile and can be cut, drilled, and milled to match specific application requirements. Common projects include brackets, spacers, supports, wear plates, and fabrication projects. At Metric & Multistandard, we supply flat stock with widths ranging from 6mm to 150mm, and thicknesses ranging from 2mm to 20mm.

Shaft Keys

Shaft keys are square or rectangular machine keys specifically designed to lock rotating elements onto shafts, such as gears, pulleys, sprockets, or couplings. These keys fit into slots on a shaft and transmit torque to prevent independent rotation. Available in carbon steel, we supply shaft keys ranging from A3x3x6 to A18x11x120.

Woodruff Keys

Woodruff keys are semicircular keys used to lock rotating elements onto shafts. Like shaft keys, woodruff keys help align components like pulleys, sprockets, gears, and couplings to prevent rotation on a shaft. Woodruff keys feature a unique semicircular design to fit into rounded slots cut into shafts. Metric & Multistandard supplies woodruff keys in carbon steel in a wide range of metric sizes.

Shaft Collars

Shaft collars are non-threaded fasteners that mount around a shaft to create a fixed stop or to act as a spacer. There are several types of shaft collars, including solid collars, split one-piece collars, and split two-piece collars. We offer metric collars in a wide range of sizes in either steel or A1 303 stainless steel.

Common Applications for Metric Shafting

While different projects require different solutions, metric shafts, rods, and collars can be used in a wide range of applications, including but not limited to:
  • Industrial machinery and manufacturing equipment
  • Motors, gearboxes, and drive systems
  • Pulleys, gears, sprockets, and couplings
  • Machine tooling and custom component fabrication
  • Automation and material-handling equipment
  • Laboratory and measuring equipment
  • Construction and structural fabrication
  • Automotive, aerospace, agriculture, and power generation equipment
